An antique edition of The Vision, or Hell, Purgatory and Paradise by Dante Alighieri. Translated by Rev H F Cary. In a scarce cover design by John W Lovell Company, New York. It includes at least two black and white illustrations by Gustave Doré. The endpages are decorated and good, there is remnants of a small sticker on the left endpage. The pages are stiff and moderate to heavy toning throughout. The pages have a red decorative Victorian border. 452 pages. Size: 7.5”.
According to Google, the publisher was in business from 1878 to 1893 making this book from the late 19th century, although it is not dated. In 1890 this publisher became the United States Book Company, making this book likely from the 1880's. There is not gilt on the foredge of this book. The lower right cover corner bends downward. There is sunning on the backstrip and shelfwear on the upper spine.
