A decorative Victorian edition of Homer's Iliad. Translated by Alexander Pope with notes and introduction by Rev Theodore Alois Buckley and Flaxman's Designs. Published around 1885 by Belford, Clarke & Company, New York (no date). The cover is embossed with gilt cover flowers and is a shade of brown with red undertones. There is gilt decoration on the backstrip with elaborate decoration. There is shelf-wear and a tear in the cloth on the lower backstrip. There is also a very small tear on the upper backstrip near the back cover connection. There is gilt on the foredge of the pages. The endpages are tan brown and good as well as the hinges. There is a large foxing spot on the free-fly page and a penciled name. There is also heavy foxing on the enclosed tissue opposite the title page. There is an Introduction and Preface section. There are around four black and white illustrations including the frontispiece (pictured). There is a horizontal tear in one page (pictured). The pages have a red decorative border throughout. 500 pages. Size: 7 5/8 x 5 1/4".
