There is a vertical soil streak on the spine. The decorative right endpage is missing (pictured). There is gilt on the foredge. The pages are mostly stiff and white with light foxing in the back. At page 256-257 there is heavier foxing and a torn chip in the upper margin. 409 pages + advertising.
Adam Bede is a classic Victorian novel as a portrait of English village life at the turn of the 19th century. George Eliot portrayed ordinary people and their emotional struggles, moral dilemmas and the book was groundbreaking in it's time.
